How to check the status of your home's deed
Your county clerk or recorder's office records documents pertaining to real estate property and maintains cross-reference indexes to these records in almost every part of the United States. This office usually also maintains a set of maps which show the current ownership of every tract of land in the entire county.
The records are open for public inspection and copies of documents may be purchased for a small fee at the office. Some counties even offer online access to these records. It's a good idea to make a habit of requesting copied of deeds, leins and any other documents that have been filed against youu property at regular invervals, at least once every six months.
. . .The actual homeowner often is completely unaware of the scam until a lender starts sending letters to the property indicating they intend to foreclose on the home due to nonpayment.
